Valley of Flowers is no doubt a high altitude trek, and people get scared just by hearing this- without actually knowing what the real height is, whether it is safe to trek at this altitude or not, and just because of this fear, they end up missing out such an incredible beauty that exists right here in India.
The Valley of Flowers trek starts from Govinghat, which is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, at 6,300ft. Here, we will stay for one night to help our body adjust to the altitude. The next day we drove to pulna, and from there we started our 9km uphill trek which take us upto the the base village of our trek which is Ghangaria, located at around 10,000ft.
Now coming to our iconic spot of the trek - Valley of flowers National Park located around 4km from Ghangaria at an altitude of 12,000ft. The trail is clear and the trek is easy. There’s only about a 5% chance that someone might experience altitude sickness or face any issue while trekking towards the national park. That’s because we have spent our night in Ghangaria and now our body has become comfortable with the altitude.
Honestly, if you even feel a bit of a headache, tiredness. The moment you enter Valley of Flowers National Park you’ll forget everything- the height, the headache- everything fades away. Its beauty affects you so deeply that you just get lost in its charm.
Let’s be real - Hemkund Sahib is no joke, and this day might not be easy for you. If you’re a beginner, this day can definitely feel a bit tough- but it’s not impossible. To reach Hemkund Sahib, you’ll have to cover about 6km one way. Don’t get fooled by just 6km in 6kms you will gain an altitude of almost 4,500-5,000ft of elevation. This makes it challenging, because as we go higher the air gets thinner and breathing becomes harder.

How to Deal with Valley of Flowers Trek height
As the Valley of Flowers trek is a high-altitude trek and after 3000m, the air becomes thinner and the body needs time to adjust. These are the main points to keep in mind while trekking to avoid the risk of Altitude Sickness:
Walk slowly while gaining altitude.
Avoid alcohol while trekking, and also drink plenty of water while trekking to avoid dehydration.
Carry protein bars, dry fruits, which provide energy to your body.
During trekking if you notice symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, inform your trek leader ASAP and have some rest.
Rest properly and provide enough time to the body to recover.
