Kuari Pass Trek Packing List
Most people overpack for Kuari Pass in the wrong way. They bring three pairs of jeans, a heavy sweater and a bag full of snacks, then shiver at Khullara because they're one warm layer short.
The fix is simple. Pack by layers, and pack for the season you're actually going in. A January batch and a May batch walk the same trail, but nights at Khullara can be close to 15°C apart. Your bag should look different too.
This Kuari Pass trek packing list covers exactly what to carry for each season, what TrekYaari already gives you so you don't haul it from home, and the small things that make the biggest difference on a cold night at 11,000 ft.
Quick Answer For the Kuari Pass trek, pack 4 to 5 warm layers in winter (December to February) and 3 to 4 in spring (March to May): a thermal base layer, a fleece, a padded or down jacket, and a windproof or rain shell. Add high-ankle trekking shoes, woollen socks, waterproof gloves, a woollen cap, UV sunglasses, a 50 to 60 litre rucksack with rain cover, a headlamp and two 1-litre bottles. TrekYaari provides sleeping bags, mats, trekking poles, gaiters and, in winter, microspikes. Aim for 8 to 10 kg excluding water. |

Winter vs Spring: How Your Kuari Pass Packing List Changes
Kuari Pass runs in two seasons: January to May and October to December. The cold at Khullara, the highest campsite at about 11,000 ft, decides almost everything you pack.
| Winter (Dec to Feb) | Spring (Mar to May) |
Night at Khullara | About -6 to -12°C | About -4 to 1°C in March, warming to 2 to 7°C in May |
Day on the trail | About 3 to 10°C | About 8 to 20°C, warmest in May |
Snow | On most of the upper trail, deepest in February | Melting from March, near the pass only by April |
Warm layers | 4 to 5 | 3 to 4 (March packs closer to winter) |
Insulated jacket | Down or heavy padded jacket, essential | Medium padded jacket or a thick fleece |
Gloves | Waterproof insulated gloves plus liners | One pair of warm gloves |
Rain gear | Rarely needed, a windproof shell is enough | Rain jacket and rain cover, showers are common in April and May |
Microspikes and gaiters | Needed, provided by TrekYaari | Usually not needed after mid-April |
Going in October or November? Pack as you would for March: nights at Khullara are around -2 to 3°C in October and drop towards -5°C by late November. Add the winter extras if you're on a late November batch.

The Layering System: What to Wear on the Kuari Pass Trek
One big jacket doesn't work on this trek. You'll sweat on the climb from Gulling to Khullara, then cool down fast the moment you stop. Thin layers that you can add and remove keep you warm without getting soaked.
Layer | What it does | What to carry |
1. Base layer | Pulls sweat off your skin | Thermal top and bottom, synthetic or merino wool. No cotton |
2. Trekking layer | What you walk in during the day | 2 to 3 full-sleeve quick-dry T-shirts, 2 quick-dry trek pants |
3. Mid layer | Traps heat | 1 fleece jacket. Add a light sweater in winter |
4. Insulation | Keeps you warm at camp and on summit morning | 1 down or padded jacket |
5. Shell | Blocks wind and rain | 1 windproof and waterproof jacket. Rain pants in spring |
On a winter summit morning you'll start in all five layers and peel off the shell and fleece as the sun comes up. At camp after dark, it's base, fleece and down jacket together. In May, the base and trekking layers are often all you need until evening.
Kuari Pass Trek Packing List for Winter (Dec to Feb)
Winter is when the packing list matters most. Snow, short days and nights well below freezing leave little room for a missing item.
Clothing
• Thermal inner set (top and bottom), 1 to 2 sets
• Full-sleeve quick-dry T-shirts, 2 to 3
• Quick-dry trek pants, 2 (one can be fleece-lined)
• Fleece jacket, 1, plus a light sweater
• Down or heavy padded jacket, 1. This is the one item you can't skip in winter
• Windproof, waterproof shell jacket, 1
• Woollen cap and a neck gaiter or balaclava
• Waterproof insulated gloves plus a pair of thin liner gloves
• Woollen or thermal socks, 4 to 5 pairs, with one pair kept only for sleeping
Footwear
• High-ankle trekking shoes with deep grip, ideally waterproof and already broken in
• Camp slippers or sandals, worn over socks at camp
• Microspikes and gaiters are provided by TrekYaari for winter batches
Winter extras that make a real difference
• A wide-mouth water bottle you can sleep with. Narrow-neck bottles freeze shut at Khullara. Fill one with warm water at night and keep it inside your sleeping bag.
• Spare batteries in an inside pocket. Cold drains headlamp and phone batteries fast. Keep your power bank and phone in your jacket or sleeping bag at night.
• Hand warmers, a pair or two. Cheap, light, and very welcome on summit morning.
• A dry set of clothes kept only for camp. Never sleep in the clothes you sweated in.

Kuari Pass Trek Packing List for Spring (Mar to May)
Spring is gentler, but it isn't warm everywhere. March still feels like winter at Khullara, and April afternoons can bring rain or a quick snow shower near the pass. The biggest change is adding rain protection and dropping one warm layer.
Clothing
• Thermal inner set, 1 (essential in March and April, optional in May)
• Full-sleeve quick-dry T-shirts, 2 to 3
• Quick-dry trek pants, 2
• Fleece jacket, 1
• Padded jacket, 1. A medium one is enough by May
• Rain jacket and rain pants, or a poncho
• Woollen cap and a sun cap
• Warm gloves, 1 pair, waterproof if you can
• Woollen or trekking socks, 3 to 4 pairs
Footwear
• High-ankle trekking shoes with good grip. The forest trail can be muddy and slushy as the snow melts
• Camp slippers or sandals
• Gaiters help on early-spring snow and mud, and are provided by TrekYaari
Spring extras
• A rain cover for your rucksack, plus a few plastic or dry bags inside it. Afternoon showers are common in April and May.
• Stronger sunscreen. Longer days and snow-reflected light near the pass burn faster than people expect.
• A light sun hat or cap for the warm forest stretches.
What to Carry for the Kuari Pass Trek in Every Season
These go in your bag whatever month you trek in.
Backpack and daypack
• Rucksack, 50 to 60 litres, with a rain cover and a good hip belt
• A small daypack (15 to 20 litres) for summit morning, when you leave the big bag at Khullara
Essentials
• Headlamp with spare batteries
• Two 1-litre water bottles, or a bottle and a hydration bladder (bladder tubes freeze in winter)
• UV-protection sunglasses with side cover. Snow glare near the pass is harsh in every season
• Sunscreen SPF 50 and a lip balm with SPF
• Power bank. Charging is limited or absent after Joshimath
• A few energy snacks you actually like: dry fruit, nuts, chocolate
Toiletries
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, a small quick-dry towel, toilet paper
• Wet wipes and hand sanitiser. There are no showers on the trail
• Moisturiser or cold cream. The air is very dry
• A small zip-lock bag to carry your waste back down
Personal medicines and documents
• Any medicines you take regularly, in enough quantity for the trek plus two days
• A few basics: blister plasters, a pain reliever and ORS sachets. Talk to your doctor about anything for altitude before you go
• A government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID), with a photocopy
• Some cash. ATMs and card payments are unreliable beyond Joshimath
Your trek leader carries a full first aid kit, an oxygen cylinder and a pulse oximeter, so you only need personal medicines.
Kuari Pass Trek Gear Provided by TrekYaari
You don't need to buy or carry these. They're part of the trek:
• Sleeping bags
• Sleeping mats
• Trekking poles
• Gaiters
• Microspikes, on winter departures
• Tents, kitchen and dining setup, toilet tents, first aid kit, oxygen cylinder and pulse oximeter
That takes the heaviest and most expensive items off your list. If you'd still prefer your own trekking poles, bring them. Many people like a pole they've already walked with.
What Not to Pack
• Jeans and cotton clothes. Cotton stays wet with sweat and turns cold the moment you stop walking.
• Extra outfits "just in case". Two trekking T-shirts and two pants are plenty for five days.
• Heavy toiletries, full-size bottles and big towels. Travel sizes do the job.
• Expensive jewellery and gadgets you don't need. There's nowhere safe to keep them.
• Single-use plastic you'll struggle to carry out. Whatever goes up has to come back down.
How Heavy Should Your Bag Be?
Aim for 8 to 10 kg excluding water. That's comfortable for most people on the climb from Gulling to Khullara, which is the longest uphill stretch. Winter bags sit at the top of that range because of the extra layers. Spring bags can be lighter.
A quick way to check: pack everything, then lift the bag with one hand. If you can't hold it at arm's length for a few seconds, take something out. Usually it's clothes.
Packing order helps too. Put your sleeping-only clothes and down jacket at the bottom in a dry bag, the fleece and day snacks near the top, and sunscreen, lip balm, gloves and your headlamp in the lid or hip-belt pockets so you don't unpack on the trail.
Where to Buy or Rent Trek Gear in India
You don't need expensive brands for Kuari Pass. Most of this list is available at Decathlon stores and on its website, and at outdoor shops in Delhi, Dehradun and Rishikesh. Rishikesh is a good last stop if you're travelling through it, with several trekking stores selling and renting jackets, shoes and rucksacks.
Buy your trekking shoes at least three to four weeks before the trek and walk in them. New shoes are the most common cause of blisters on day two. Down jackets and rucksacks are fine to rent if you trek once a year.
Joshimath has a few small shops for last-minute basics like caps, gloves and socks, but don't count on finding good jackets or shoes there.
Pack Light, Trek Better
TrekYaari runs the Kuari Pass Trek from Joshimath, with batches from January to May and October to December. Every batch is led by a BMC or AMC certified trek leader, and the team shares a packing checklist and does a gear check before you start walking, so nothing important gets left behind.
Conclusion
Layers over bulk. A down jacket in winter, a rain jacket in spring. Good shoes you've already walked in, dry socks for the night, and a bottle you can sleep with when it's below zero. Leave the jeans at home.
Get those right and the rest of the Kuari Pass trek packing list is easy. And since the sleeping bag, mat, poles, gaiters and microspikes are already taken care of, your bag ends up lighter than most people expect.
