Kuari Pass Trek Month by Month
Ask ten people who have done Kuari Pass when you should go, and you'll get five different months. They're all right. The trail stays the same, but the trek changes completely through the year. In January you walk through snow up to your shins under a hard blue sky. In April the forest turns red and pink with rhododendrons. In October the air is so clear that Nanda Devi looks close enough to touch.
So the real question is which month suits you: your fitness, how you feel about the cold, what you want to see, and how much leave you can get. Pick well and you come home with the trek you imagined. Pick badly and you get snow you didn't want, or green meadows when you were hoping for white.
This guide makes that choice easy. It rates every month on snow, views, cold and crowds, goes deep on the Kuari Pass trek in December, and maps the 2026-27 long weekends and moon dates so you can go from picking a season to picking actual dates.
Quick Answer The best time for the Kuari Pass trek depends on what you want. Go in January or February for deep snow. A Kuari Pass trek in December gives you first snow with clear skies. October and early November have the clearest views, April has rhododendrons, and May has the mildest nights. Skip July and August. The trek runs from January to May and October to December. |

Kuari Pass Trek in December
Kuari Pass in December sits between autumn's clear skies and January's deep snow, so you often get both: a blue sky above and a white pass under your boots. It's the month people ask about most, and it's one of the best months on this trail if you plan it well.
Snow in December: Early vs Late Month
Part of December | Where the snow usually is | What it means for you |
1 to 15 December | Around the pass and the upper Khullara slopes | Dry forest walk for the first two days, snow on summit day |
16 to 31 December | Often on the Khullara meadow too | Snow walking on the upper half of the trek, a proper winter feel |
Every season is a little different. A strong western disturbance can bring heavy snow by mid-December, while a dry year can keep the meadow brown until Christmas. If snow underfoot matters most to you, the second half of the month is the safer bet. If you'd rather have mostly dry trails with a snowy summit, go in the first half.
How Cold Is Kuari Pass in December?
Days on the trail are usually about 5 to 10°C and feel warm in direct sun. Nights at Khullara drop to about -6 to -10°C, and the summit morning is colder again, especially when wind comes over the ridge. December days are the shortest of the year, about 10 hours 10 minutes, with sunrise around 7:00 AM and sunset around 5:10 PM. Summit day starts in the dark, so the walk up begins with headlamps and the sunrise often comes on the climb itself.
You need a proper winter setup: 4 to 5 warm layers including a down or padded jacket, a windproof shell, two layers of gloves, and microspikes and gaiters for the upper trail.
Christmas and New Year Batches
The last week of December is the busiest winter week on Kuari Pass. In 2026, Christmas falls on Friday 25 December and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027. Take four days of leave in between and you get ten days off, from 25 December to 3 January. Those are the first winter dates to fill, both for trek batches and for overnight buses from Delhi, so book four to six weeks ahead.
There's also a bonus this year. The full moon falls on Thursday 24 December, so a Christmas batch gets moonlight on fresh snow. On a clear night, the whole Khullara meadow glows bright enough to walk around camp without a headlamp.
Who Should Do the Kuari Pass Trek in December
• First-timers who want snow without walking through it for the whole trek.
• Photographers. Clear air plus fresh snow makes December one of the best months for mountain photos.
• People with year-end leave, who can plan around the Christmas and New Year weekends.
If you want deep snow all the way, January or February suits you better. For campsite temperatures, wind chill and what to wear, read our full winter guide to Kuari Pass.
December Trek Tips
• Book early for the last week. Christmas to New Year batches and buses fill first.
• Keep a buffer day after the trek. An early snowfall can slow the road down from Tugasi.
• Carry spare headlamp batteries. Cold drains them, and summit day starts before sunrise.
• Wear sunglasses even in the forest. December light on fresh snow is very bright.
Every Other Trekking Month at a Glance
The trek season runs from October to May, with a break for the monsoon. Here's what each month is like, who it suits, and what to watch for.
October: The Clearest Month
After the monsoon washes the air clean, October brings the sharpest views of the year. Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Kamet and Chaukhamba stand out crisp against a deep blue sky. The trail is dry, the meadows turn gold, and days are pleasant for walking at around 10 to 15°C. Nights at Khullara hover around freezing, which surprises people who expect autumn to be mild.
Best for | Watch out for |
Photographers and first-timers who don't want snow | Dussehra week (17 to 20 October 2026) fills fast. Nights are colder than expected |
November: Quiet, Clear and Cold
November keeps October's clear skies with fewer people on the trail. It's also the driest trekking month, so the trail is reliable. It gets colder each week, and by the end of the month nights at Khullara drop to around -5°C. The first snow of the season often dusts the pass in the last week.
Best for | Watch out for |
Quiet trails and clear views | Pack winter layers from mid-November |
January: Full Winter
January is the coldest month and the one for a true snow trek. Snow usually covers the trail from the forest above Gulling all the way to the pass, and nights at Khullara regularly drop below -10°C. Between snowfall spells the sky is a hard, clear blue, and the forest is almost silent. It asks more of you, and gives more back.
Best for | Watch out for |
Snow lovers with some fitness and good cold-weather gear | Coldest nights of the year. A snowfall can delay summit day by a day |
February: Deepest Snow
February gets the most snowfall of the winter, so the snow on the ground is usually at its deepest. Nights are only slightly milder than January, but days get noticeably longer through the month, which helps on summit day. Batches are quieter than December and January.
Best for | Watch out for |
Deep snow without the year-end crowds | Soft, deep snow in the afternoons slows progress |
March: Snow Above, Spring Below
March is two seasons on one trail. The lower forest thaws and the first rhododendron buds appear, while the meadows around Khullara often stay white. Nights are much easier than mid-winter. The Holi and Good Friday holidays in late March 2027 make it one of the easiest months to plan a long break.
Best for | Watch out for |
Some snow with milder nights, and long holiday breaks | Snow, slush and mud can all show up in one day. Waterproof shoes matter |
April: Rhododendron Month
[IMAGE: Rhododendrons in bloom on the forest trail. Alt: rhododendrons on the kuari pass trail in april]
April is when the forest between Tugasi and Khullara comes alive. Rhododendrons bloom in red and pink, the meadows turn green, and snow is mostly limited to the area near the pass until about mid-month. Days are comfortably warm. Clouds tend to build by late morning, so the best views come early.
Best for | Watch out for |
Families and first-timers who want colour over snow | Afternoon cloud can hide the peaks. Start early each day |
May: The Easiest Month
May has the mildest conditions of the season, with nights at Khullara around 2 to 7°C and nearly 14 hours of daylight. There's little or no snow on the trail. Views are clearest in the mornings, with haze building later as the monsoon gets closer. School holidays make it a popular month for families.
Best for | Watch out for |
Families and people who dislike the cold | Afternoon haze and the odd shower. School holidays fill batches early |
Months to Skip: June to September
The monsoon brings heavy rain, cloud and landslides on the road from late June to September, so regular batches pause. If you only have monsoon dates, the Valley of Flowers is at its best exactly then. See Valley of Flowers vs Kuari Pass.
Plan Around Holidays: 2026-27 Long Weekends for Kuari Pass

Full Moon or New Moon? Picking Dates for the Night Sky
Around a full moon, the snow glows and you barely need a headlamp. Around a new moon, the stars are at their best. We calculated the dates for this season.
Month | New moon (dark skies) | Full moon (moonlit nights) |
Oct 2026 | 10 Oct | 26 Oct |
Nov 2026 | 9 Nov | 24 Nov |
Dec 2026 | 9 Dec | 24 Dec |
Jan 2027 | 8 Jan | 22 Jan |
Feb 2027 | 6 Feb | 21 Feb |
Mar 2027 | 8 Mar | 22 Mar |
Apr 2027 | 7 Apr | 21 Apr |
May 2027 | 6 May | 20 May |

How TrekYaari Runs Kuari Pass Through the Season
TrekYaari runs Kuari Pass Trek batches from January to May and October to December, starting and ending in Joshimath. Every batch has a BMC or AMC certified trek leader, a first aid kit, oxygen cylinder and pulse oximeter, and winter gear such as crampons and gaiters when needed. In winter, the summit start time is set the evening before, and the group turns back if the ridge isn't safe.
How we built this guide TrekYaari has run treks in Uttarakhand since 2021 and has sent more than 20,000 trekkers to the mountains, with a 4.8/5 rating from over 800 of them. Month ratings use TrekYaari's published route data, cross-checked against other sources. Holidays come from the official DoPT lists, and moon dates were calculated for this season. |
The Bottom Line: Pick Your Month in 30 Seconds
There's no wrong month to do Kuari Pass between October and May. Each one gives you a different version of the same trail. Winter gives you snow and silence. Spring gives you colour and easy nights. Autumn gives you the clearest mountains of the year. The only real mistake is going in a month that doesn't match what you came for.
If you're still undecided, start with the one thing you want most:
If this is you | Go in |
"I want to walk in real snow" | January or February |
"I want snow, but also blue skies" | December |
"I want the best view of Nanda Devi" | October |
"I want an easy first trek" | April or May |
"I want flowers, not snow" | April |
"I have very little leave" | Holi week in March or the May holiday week |
Then do three things:
• Pick your dates early. Long weekends and the Christmas to New Year week are always the first batches to fill, and the cheaper overnight buses from Delhi go with them.
• Check the moon if the night sky matters to you. Moonlit snow or a sky full of stars, the dates are in the table above.
• Lock your seat with the ₹2,000 advance, then use the weeks before the trek to build your fitness and sort your gear.
Whichever month you choose, you'll be standing on the same pass at 12,516 ft, looking across at the same giants of the Garhwal Himalaya. The month just decides what the mountain looks like when you get there.
