Delhi to Joshimath Bus: Direct and Via Rishikesh
Buses are the cheapest way to Joshimath. You can take one long direct ride, or two shorter ones with a change in Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun.
Direct Delhi to Joshimath bus
A few private AC sleeper buses run overnight from Delhi to Joshimath, leaving around 11:20 PM from Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar or Majnu Ka Tila. They're listed on booking apps such as zingbus, from about ₹3,800 when we checked. Apps show journey times under 10 hours, but in practice expect 14 hours or more with stops and hill traffic.
It's the easiest option if you want one ticket and a bed for the night. The catch is cost: it's several times more than the two-bus route.
Two buses via Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun
This is how most people do it. Take an overnight bus from Delhi to Rishikesh (about ₹230 to ₹1,650 depending on the bus), then a morning bus up the mountain. Buses to Joshimath leave early and don't wait for latecomers:

Government buses on the hill route are basic: upright seats, frequent stops and a long day of bends. They're reliable and cheap, though, and extra buses are added in the Char Dham season. Get to the bus stand by 5:30 AM to find a seat.
Is There a Train from Delhi to Joshimath?
No. There's no railway station in Joshimath. The nearest stations are Rishikesh (Yog Nagari Rishikesh), Haridwar and Dehradun, all about 250 to 290 km away by road. In practice, you take a train from Delhi to Haridwar, where most trains stop, and continue by road.

Is a railway to Joshimath coming? The Rishikesh to Karnaprayag line is under construction, with completion expected around 2028 or later. Karnaprayag is still about 80 km from Joshimath, so the last stretch will stay a road journey.
How Much Is a Taxi from Rishikesh to Joshimath?
For a group, a taxi from Rishikesh is the best-value way to do the hill leg. You leave when you want, stop at the river confluences, and reach Joshimath in daylight. Typical one-way fares quoted by cab operators:

One-way cab platforms list rates from about ₹9 per km for a sedan to ₹13.5 per km for an Innova, and on a 500 km hill route tolls, hill charges and the driver's allowance add more. Get an all-inclusive written quote, and plan an overnight stop in Rishikesh.

• Split the drive: Delhi to Rishikesh on day one, Rishikesh to Joshimath on day two.
• Leave Rishikesh by 6 AM. The road gets busier through the day, and you want to arrive before dark.
• Don't drive the hill section at night. Landslide zones, narrow stretches and sharp bends are hard to judge.
• Fill up in Rishikesh or Srinagar, and carry cash for small towns where cards may not work.
• In winter, ask locally about snow on the roads above Joshimath before heading towards Auli.
Is There a Flight from Delhi to Joshimath?
There's no airport in Joshimath. The nearest is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, about 270 km away. Flights from Delhi take about an hour. From the airport, take a taxi to Rishikesh and continue the next morning, or hire a taxi straight to Joshimath if you land early. Flying saves you the plains, but the 8 to 10 hours of hill road stay the same.

In early 2023, land subsidence caused cracks in many buildings in parts of Joshimath, and some hotels and homes were demolished. The town still works as the base for Auli, Badrinath and the treks around it, with hotels, homestays and buses running. Before you travel, check the latest local advisories and book a stay with good recent reviews.

Joshimath to Delhi: Getting Back
The Joshimath to Delhi journey works the same way in reverse. Government buses to Rishikesh leave Joshimath in the morning, around 8 AM, and arrive in the evening. From Rishikesh, buses to Delhi run until late at night. Taxis can leave whenever you like, but start early so you're off the hill road before dark.
