About

The Mardi Himal Trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4,500 meters (14,764 feet) at Mardi Himal Base Camp, located beneath the dramatic ridges of Mardi Himal and Machapuchare (Fishtail). Situated east of the Annapurna Base Camp trail, this trek lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, offering pristine forests, alpine meadows, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes. The trail passes through untouched terrain, making it an ideal choice for trekkers looking to explore a quieter side of the Annapurna region.

Geographically, the trek lies around 28.5° N latitude and 83.9° E longitude, placing it in the heart of Nepal’s central Himalayas.

The adventure begins from Pokhara, Nepal’s scenic lake city, followed by a short drive to the trailhead at Kande or Phedi. From here, the trail ascends through charming villages, dense rhododendron forests, and open ridgelines. Key stops along the route include Deurali, Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp, each offering breathtaking views and peaceful mountain surroundings.

As you climb higher, the forests gradually give way to alpine landscapes, and the views become more dramatic. From High Camp, trekkers can hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp, where the reward is a jaw-dropping panorama of Machapuchare, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna I. The trek offers a perfect balance of natural beauty, moderate physical challenge, and solitude.

Mardi Himal (5,587 meters) lies in the shadow of Machapuchare, a sacred and unclimbed peak. Although lesser-known than Annapurna or Everest routes, the Mardi Himal trail has gained popularity in recent years for its raw beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Once used mainly by shepherds and local villagers, it is now emerging as a favorite among trekkers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience away from busy trails.

Best Time to Visit Mardi Himal Trek

Choosing the right season greatly enhances the Mardi Himal trekking experience.

Spring Season (March to May)

Spring is one of the best times for the Mardi Himal Trek. Daytime temperatures range between 10°C and 20°C at lower altitudes, while higher regions remain cool but comfortable. The trails are lined with blooming rhododendrons, and mountain views are crystal clear, making this season ideal for photography and nature lovers.

Autumn Season (September to November)

Autumn offers stable weather, minimal rainfall, and excellent visibility. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, while nights can be cold at higher camps. Clear skies provide uninterrupted views of the Annapurna range and Machapuchare, making this season perfect for a peaceful and scenic trek.

Trek Difficulty and Preparation

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered a moderate trek, suitable for beginners with good fitness and experienced trekkers alike. While no technical climbing skills are required, the trek involves steady ascents, uneven trails, and daily walking hours of 5–7 hours.

Altitude Considerations: With a maximum altitude of 4,500 meters, altitude sickness risk is lower compared to EBC, but proper acclimatization and hydration are still essential. TrekYaari’s itinerary includes a gradual ascent to ensure safe altitude gain.

Terrain and Weather: The trail includes forest paths, stone steps, ridgelines, and rocky alpine terrain. Weather can change quickly, especially at higher camps, with cold winds and occasional snowfall during colder months.

Physical Fitness: Basic cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and endurance training are recommended before the trek. Mental readiness and a steady pace are key to enjoying the journey.

Peaks Visible on the Mardi Himal Trail

One of the biggest highlights of the Mardi Himal Trek is the close-up mountain views throughout the trail. Trekkers are rewarded with stunning vistas of:

  • Machapuchare (Fishtail – 6,993 m), dominating the skyline throughout the trek

  • Annapurna South (7,219 m)

  • Hiunchuli (6,441 m)

  • Annapurna I (8,091 m)

  • Gangapurna and Annapurna III in the distance

From High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp, the feeling of standing face-to-face with these giants is truly unforgettable.

How to Reach Pokhara

Pokhara, the starting point for the Mardi Himal Trek, is Nepal’s scenic city located about 200 km west of Kathmandu. Known for its lakes, mountain views, and trekking hub, Pokhara is well-connected by air and road, making it the ideal gateway for your Himalayan adventure. Most trekkers travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara before beginning the Mardi Himal Trek.

Traveling to Pokhara

By Air

Pokhara is served by Pokhara Airport (IATA: PKR), which operates domestic flights connecting it to Kathmandu. Several airlines, including Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Summit Air, offer multiple daily flights. The flight takes about 25–30 minutes and provides stunning aerial views of the Annapurna and Machapuchare peaks. Flying is the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Pokhara, especially for trekkers aiming to save time.

By Road

Pokhara is well-connected to Kathmandu and other major cities via highways.

From Kathmandu: Regular tourist buses, deluxe coaches, and private taxis operate daily. The road journey takes approximately 6–8 hours, passing through scenic valleys and hills.

From India: If traveling overland, trekkers can enter Nepal through border points such as Sunauli–Bhairahawa or Raxaul–Birgunj. From these locations, buses or private vehicles can take you to Pokhara, usually requiring a full day’s travel.

Once in Pokhara, trekkers typically travel by private jeep, taxi, or local bus to Kande, the starting point of the Mardi Himal Trek. From Kande, the trek begins with a gradual ascent through beautiful forests, villages, and alpine scenery leading up to the Mardi Himal Base Camp.

How to Prepare for the Mardi Himal Trek

  • Trekkers are advised to begin physical fitness training at least 4–6 weeks prior to the trek, focusing on cardiovascular endurance through activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, or stair climbing.

  • Strength training for legs and core muscles is recommended to manage long trekking days, steep ascents, and uneven terrain.

  • Packing appropriate gear is crucial, including layered clothing, sturdy trekking shoes with good grip, insulated jackets, warm gloves, and a sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain temperatures.

  • Understanding the trek route and daily walking schedule helps trekkers maintain a steady pace and effective energy management throughout the journey.

  • Strict adherence to acclimatization days and avoiding rapid altitude gain significantly reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

  • Mental preparation is equally important; a positive mindset, patience, and flexibility help trekkers adapt to challenging conditions and changing environments.

Begin your third day of the Mardi Himal Trek with an early breakfast before setting off toward Forest Camp. Leaving Pothana behind, you will follow a rocky trail that gradually transitions into a peaceful forest pathway. As you walk through the woodland, stay with your trekking group and follow your guide along the marked route.
After approximately an hour of walking and climbing, you will reach Deurali, a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Phewa Lake, Pokhara Valley, and the magnificent Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Take a short break here to appreciate the panoramic scenery and capture some memorable photographs before continuing your journey.
From Deurali, the trail leads deeper into the dense forests that characterize this section of the Mardi Himal route. The forest is home to a diverse range of plant species, including rhododendron, oak, birch, maple, and hemlock trees.

Begin your fourth day of the Mardi Himal Trek with breakfast at Forest Camp before continuing your journey toward High Camp. Today, the trail gradually takes you through dense forests, scenic ridgelines, and increasingly open mountain landscapes. As you gain elevation, the terrain becomes more challenging, so maintain a steady pace and take short breaks whenever necessary.
The initial stretch follows peaceful woodland paths surrounded by beautiful rhododendron trees. During spring, these forests burst into vibrant colors, creating a spectacular natural setting for your trek. As you continue climbing, the vegetation gradually becomes thinner, revealing more expansive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Your next major stop is Low Camp, a scenic resting point that offers magnificent views of Machhapuchhre, popularly known as Mount Fishtail. Its distinctive summit rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape, creating one of the most memorable sights along the Mardi Himal route. Low Camp is also a wonderful place to pause, enjoy lunch, and admire the breathtaking Himalayan scenery.
After your break, you will resume the ascent toward High Camp. This section of the trail becomes steeper and more exposed, with winding paths along the mountain ridges. As you climb higher, the dense forests give way to open alpine terrain, providing increasingly impressive views of the Annapurna range and neighboring peaks. Walk carefully, follow your guide's instructions, and allow yourself enough time to adjust to the increasing altitude.
Eventually, you will reach High Camp, one of the most spectacular overnight stops on the Mardi Himal Trek. Situated at approximately 3,580 meters above sea level, this high-altitude destination offers sweeping views of Machhapuchhre, Mardi Himal, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The temperature can drop considerably in the evening, so keep your warm clothing easily accessible.
After checking into your tea house, take some time to relax and enjoy the remarkable mountain surroundings. If weather conditions permit, you can watch the changing colors of the mountains as the sun sets over the Himalayas. Enjoy a warm dinner, prepare your trekking essentials for the following day, and get an early night's rest before your exciting journey toward Mardi Himal Base Camp.
