The Legend of Panch Kedar
Thus Panch Kedar got its origin from the epic of Mahabharata, the grand epic of India. As it was mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, after the war of Kurukshetra the Pandavas felt the dire need of purification for killing their own kith and kin. What she and her husband had done was to follow the advice of Vyasa when they went to make amends to Lord Shiva. But, being unable to forget they dared to molest her, she immediately turned into a bull (Nandi) and went underground in Guptkashi.
The specific parts of his body started suddenly appearing in other parts of the Himalayas while the Pandavas were on the search for him. Hardly were these five ancient places considered as the five sacred temples:
-Kedarnath – Hump
- Tungnath – Arms
- Rudranath – Face
- Madhyamaheshwar – Navel
- Kalpeshwar – Hair
These places are revered to be the locations where the Pandavas constructed temples for Lord Shiva and are referred as the Panch Kedar now.
The Five Temples of Panch Kedar
1.Kedarnath: The Most Sacred of All
Altitude: 3,583 meters (11,755 feet)

Kedarnath is one of the popular and lies at the highest altitude in the Panch Kedar pilgrimage. Located at the banks of the river Mandakini in Rudraprayag, it is also one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines. It is a temple at Kurji and is constructed with black stone blocks and is considered to be constructed by the Pandavas and later on renovated by Adi Shankaracharya.
It is one of the four popular Char Dham Yatra sites, situated in the state of Uttarakhand, and the distance from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is around 16 km. Though it is a comparatively more difficult yatra, devotees get the benefits of lovely snow clad hills and the sacred aura of the temple.

Tungnath is start point of the Himalayan range; its trek start from Chopta which is also known as Mini Switzerland. The Five-kilometer Climbing* is less long but more tough, where one can clearly see the Nanda Devi, Trishul & Chaukhamba peaks.
They have an opportunity to proceed to the Chandrashila Peak at the height of 4,000 meters that offers stunning view of sunrise as well as the milky way and other peaks.
3. Rudranath: The Natural Rock Temple
Altitude: 2,286 meters (7,500 feet)

Among the Panch Kedar, Rudranath temple is special, where Lord Shiva’s face is installed in form of an idol. Unlike the other temples built of stones, Rudranath temple is a natural cave temple located in the rhododendron forests and high pastures.
Rudranath is one of the most difficult among the Panch Kedar and stretching for 20-22 Kilometers from Sagar Village or Lyuti Bugyal respectively. The trail also includes *Anusuya Devi Temple, lush green meadows, and thick forest area. Thus this makes Rudranath a spiritually and scenically fascinating but relatively offbeat pilgrimage site.

A landmark associated with the temple interesting is Buda Madhyamaheshwar, it is a small temple located at 2 km uphill from the temple providing a vantage view of Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Kedarnath peaks.
